Benefit plate sale for local minister Gary Ansell
The Devine Christian Church is having a benefit for our minister Gary Ansell and his family to help pay his medical expenses.
"He and his wife, Erneva, are just kind of like a mom and dad to all of us here at Devine Christian Church. We think a lot of them. When they first came to Devine about two years ago, they asked families from the congregation to have dinner at their home in order to get to know all of us. They are very personable, hospitable people,” said the church secretary Susan Bowen.
“They are very compassionate people—if anybody from the congregation is sick—he’s there. If you need help, if you need food—their door is always open,” Bowen adds, “and so we just want to show the love back to him that he has shown to all of us. He is a very caring man.”
The benefit includes a barbecue plate with brisket, sausage, rice, and beans. Plates are $7.00 each. The benefit is scheduled for Saturday, August 2nd from 11am to 2pm at the Devine Christian Church on Hwy 173 just past the high school. For tickets, please call (210) 414-8783.
On the same day, our minister’s family is having a yard sale at 8am on the church grounds. For details, see ad in the Classifieds section of the newspaper.

Kathy Blount, of Dramatic Diva Productions, is very excited about the variety of contestants and their diverse talents.  Contestants range in age from 5 to 60+.  There is a gentleman who plays the pan flute, a pianist, and young lady who does an acrobatic hula hoop routine.  There are several singers including one who sings acapella, four who also play the guitar, and a father-daughter comedy duet.  Kathy is positive the audience will enjoy an extremely entertaining evening!
Adding to the evening’s excitement are the cash prizes that will be awarded to the top three contestants.  First prize, co-sponsored by The Rustic Courtyard and Dramatic Diva Productions, is $1,000.  Mumme’s, Inc. and Dairy Queen of Hondo are co-sponsoring the $500 second prize.  The $250 third prize is sponsored by First Klass Cleaners located in Castroville, Devine, Hondo, and Lytle.
